L‘écriture pragmatique. Un concept d’histoire médiévale à l’échelle européenne

Problématique

Vingt ans après le collectif Pragmatische Schriftlichkei, le concept d’écriture pragmatique s’est imposé dans le champ de l’histoire des pratiques textuelles médiévales. Mais au-delà d’un usage désormais convenu pour qualifier et valoriser tout un spectre de sources écrites, qu’entend-on exactement quand on parle d’écriture(s) pragmatique(s) ? La popularisation de la notion a-t-elle conduit à son évidement, ou à sa dilution dans un champ trop vaste ? Son succès est-il dû à son efficacité heuristique ? Pour tenter de répondre à ces questions, et d’en soulever quelques autres, le Laboratoire de Médiévistique Occidentale de Paris a organisé le 12 avril 2012 une journée-débat, centrée autour de la comparaison des usages de la notion dans quatre grands champs de recherche médiévale européenne : l’Italie, l’espace germanophone, la France et le Royaume-Uni. On trouvera ici un ensemble de quatre textes (I. Bretthauer, H. Dewez, H. Lacey et I. Lazzarini) reflétant la partie des échanges qui a porté sur les usages de la notion en France, au Royaume-Uni et en Italie, ainsi que le lien directif vers un compte rendu circonstancié de l’intégralité des débats rédigé par Sébastien Barret et Dominique Stutzmann.

Pragmatic Writing. A Concept in Medieval History on a European Scale. Twenty years after the collective project Pragmatische Schriftlichkiet, the concept of pragmatic writing is well established in the field of the history of medieval textual practice. But beyond a now accepted usage which can be used to denote and promote a broad variety of written sources, what do we mean exactly by ‘pragmatic literacy’, or even ‘pragmatic literacies’ ? Has the popularisation of this notion hollowed it out, or diluted it in too vast a field ? Is its success due to its interpretative usefulness ? In an effort to answer these questions, and to raise a number of additional ones, the Laboratoire de Médiévistique Occidentale de Paris organised a day of debates on 12 April 2012, centred on the comparison between usages of this concept in current medieval research in four European areas : Italy, the German-speaking world, France and Great Britain. Reproduced here are four texts (by I. Bretthauer, H. Dewez, H. Lacey and I. Lazzarini) which reflect the exchanges which took place over the use of this notion in France, Britain and in Italy, as well as a link to an account of the entirety of the debates compiled by Sébastien Barret and Dominique Stutzmann.
